The Government of India has always shown substantial interest in the development of Higher Education and research in the country. They are associated and is the chief of granting approvals for Universities and examinations. They have approved a number of Universities such as ITM University, SRM University, etc. and examinations such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, CMAT etc. In this context, several grants and scholarships are being provided to Universities, colleges and individual students to provide financial aid and encourage them to study further.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development is the body responsible for the development of human resources in India. The ministry consists of two departments:
- The Department of School Education and Literacy
- The Department of Higher Education
The Department of Higher Education comprises of a University Grants Commission which is the body responsible for the upkeep of higher education. Many Universities such as SRM University and its entrance examination SRMJEEE 2018 are also approved by MHRD. The UGC is responsible for expending grants and funds to universities and colleges throughout the country.
Grants and Scholarships issued by the MHRD
The MHRD offers National Scholarships and helps in the selection process for the External Scholarships offered by various countries to deserving students. The scholarships under these categories are:
The National Scholarships
- Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students
- Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir
- Scheme for Scholarship to Students from the Non-Hindi Speaking States for Post Matric Studies in Hindi
Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students
This scheme offers financial aid to those students who perform well in their respective stream and have an annual income of less than 6 lakh per annum. Students who have completed their standard 12 with more than 80 percentile can avail this scholarship. The scholarship amount will be Rs. 10,000 per annum for the first three years and Rs. 20,000 in their fourth and fifth year of study.
Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir
This scholarship helps students hailing from Jammu and Kashmir to pursue their higher studies in other universities throughout the country. The scholarship amount varies from course to course.
Scheme for Scholarship to Students from the Non-Hindi Speaking States for Post Matric Studies in Hindi
This scholarship was formulated with an objective of encouraging students to study Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states. One can avail this scholarship of Rs. 300/- to 100/- a month if he or she has taken up a fulltime course in Hindi by a recognized institution.

- Commonwealth Scholarships for the United Kingdom and New Zealand
- Scholarships offered by China, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Italy, Mexico, and Sri Lanka.
- Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship (fully funded by the Government of India)
Scholarship offers received from various countries are administered by MHRD and the process of obtaining the scholarship is made easy for deserving candidates. In addition to these, the Ministry issues the No Obligation to Return to India (NORI) Certificate and implements the Central Scheme of Interest Subsidy for Education Loans (CSIS).
A number of other grants, scholarships, and fellowship funds are also granted to specific institutions to suit their needs. Every year, lakhs of students are benefitting from these scholarship schemes which are aimed at improving the skill set of Indian students and to assist them in continuing their education in spite of the financial pressure.
